One Night in Turin - Pre Euro 96ers only on this thread
While BT TV was creaming themselves over the over rated CL football last night I decided to open Amazon and see what they had on Prime. I soon came across One Night in Turin and with viewing sorted settled down to watch the exploits of Bobby Robson, Gazza and golden balls Lineker and their historic exploits of Italia 90

Narrated beautifully by Gary Oldman accompanied by a great soundtrack, it told the warts and all story of the campaign in Italy, brought back great personal memories and filled in so much detail of the month the England team were out that I'd forgotten and I was out their for the Cameroon game

If you love England and football in general and did so before the abomination of SKY then I can recommend you spend one of the most enjoyable 90 minutes you could have outside of watching our beloved West Ham

After the Egypt game I had to come home - I swapped my inter rail ticket with another England lad's flight ticket

Never occurred to me that flying home with another person's flight ticket would be a problem and it wasn't - everyone who turned up at the airport got stuck on charter flights back to England whether they had a ticket or not

Lots of great memories, seems a lifetime ago now

It’s startling to see the demise of our teams over the years. Compare the squad from back then to our current lot (rice excluded of course)

Why has everything got to come down to Sky ruining the game? It’s boring and so ridiculously untrue.

How has the game been ruined? It’s changed obviously, but certainly not been ruined. Misty-eyed nostalgia gets in the way of reality. Di Canio was in the Premier League era for starters and that was far from boring.

I know why its refered to as pre 96's, but for me it should be pre 90's, as that's when Sky got involved, which was the start of the downfall, as it been more about the money since that cunt Murdock ruined the game.

Our seasons are now about getting one over the so called top six, as unless we get new mega rich owners, we will never win anything (which in reality means the league cup) unless we havr some massive luck in an FA Cup run.

A world away from the 70's & 80's, when the playing field was much more even.

Wonderful doc wasn't it. A true gent although very sad at the end. People forget at how well he did. That Ipswich team had some players back then. People rave about Klopp and Guardiola but the likes of Robson, Lyall and Clough worked wonders at unfashionable Clubs. Us lot moan but look at Ipswich and Forest now!!

Just watched ‘Bobby Robson - More than a Manager’ on Netflix, as recommended by mallard earlier in the thread.

A great documentary and reminder of just how much he achieved and how underrated he was and still is. I loved the bit when he signed the young Brazilian Ronaldo for Barcelona from PSV for big money and was told that if this goes wrong you’ll probably lose your job!

Incredible how he remained a total gentleman despite spending his entire life involved in the demanding cut-throat world of top level football. You only have to listen to how the likes of Mourinho and Guardiola talk about him to understand the respect he commanded throughout the world.

I think it's quite funny that pre-96ers think that by virtue of age their opinion is much more valid than those that just so happened to be born in a different era.

I've heard as much bullshit from older fans as I have from younger fans and my personal conclusion is that football has a broad range of fan types all with different views, opinions and knowledge across all ages.

Obviously this is coming from someone born in 81 which might make me a 96er and therefore my opinion is invalid!

Turin, Italian setting
And the city don't know that the city is getting
The creme de la creme of the chess world
In a show with everything but Yul Brynner
Time flies doesn't seem a minute
Since the Tirolean spa had the chess boys in it
All change don't you know that when you
Play at this level there's no ordinary venue

You had to NOT be there, I suppose.

Oh, and Mexico 86 was the best World Cup.
You didn't have to worry about the locals setting on you, and then the police cracking down on YOU.
